Callaway Big Bertha Fusion driver

Maximum forgiveness, 4.0 of 5

Callaway's 2016 driver, which it called its most forgiving ever: a titanium Exo-Cage with a light carbon crown and sole, the weight saved moved to the edges and far back from the face, in 9°, 10.5° or a 13.5° high-launch head. Callaway no longer sells the Big Bertha Fusion new, and the Quantum Max is the current model in its line.

Choose it if

  • Your misses come off all over the face.
  • You play left-handed: it was made left-handed.
  • You need a softer shaft: it came in Light, the flex Callaway's buying guide calls senior.

Choose something else if

  • If you fight a slice and want a weight you can set for a draw, choose a later Callaway such as the MAVRIK MAX: Callaway lists no movable weight on the Fusion.

What changed in the Quantum Max

Both are Callaway drivers sold in 9° and 10.5° and both hands. The Big Bertha Fusion put a light triaxial carbon crown and sole on a titanium Exo-Cage to move weight to the edges, came in a 13.5° high-launch head as stock, and Callaway's page lists no movable weight. The Quantum Max has a 12° in place of the 13.5°, slides a 10-gram weight between neutral and draw settings, and Callaway sells it on a face of titanium, polymer and carbon layers that keeps speed on off-centre hits.

No shop we checked sells the Big Bertha Fusion new, and used it costs a fraction of a new Quantum Max. Choose it for a forgiving head and a 13.5° loft for little money; choose the Quantum Max for a weight you can set and the newer face.
