For seniors and slower swings

For women

Which one, and which loft
If you carry a driver you hit well, the 5-wood is the first fairway to buy: it launches from the deck where a 3-wood will not for most swings, and it is long enough to matter. If the driver is the problem, a 3-wood off the tee is often the straighter play, and a head with draw bias helps a slice. A mini driver does the same job off the tee with a bigger head than a 3-wood.
Match the wood to the rest of the bag by loft: the gap between your 5-wood and your first hybrid should be about four degrees. What makes a fairway wood forgiving?
A shallow face and a low, deep centre of gravity, so the club gets under the ball and launches it from a tight lie, plus a wide sole that skids rather than digs. The forgiving fairways in each line add a bigger head for moment of inertia and, on some, weight toward the heel for a draw.
3-wood, 5-wood or 7-wood?
For a slower swing the 5-wood is the honest 3-wood: easier to launch, almost as long. The 7-wood has become the club fitters hand to golfers who cannot hit a hybrid; it launches highest of all. A 3-wood earns its place only if you can get it up off the grass. The Lofts column shows what each head is sold in.
