Callaway Epic MAX driver
Maximum forgiveness, 4.0 of 5
Callaway's 2021 Epic driver, rated Max for forgiveness on Callaway's own chart: triaxial carbon that frees weight for a deep centre of gravity, a draw bias built in and a 16-gram weight that slides along the back, in 9°, 10.5° or 12°. Callaway no longer sells the Epic MAX new; the Rogue ST MAX followed it, and the Quantum Max is the newest model in its line.

What changed in the Quantum Max
Both are Callaway's 460cc drivers with a weight you move to set the flight, in 9°, 10.5° and 12° and both hands. The Epic MAX builds a draw bias into the head and slides a 16-gram weight along the back, which Callaway said corrects shot shape by up to 20 yards, behind a titanium face on its Jailbreak Speed Frame. The Quantum Max slides a 10-gram weight between neutral and draw settings, and Callaway sells it on a face of titanium, polymer and carbon layers that keeps speed on off-centre hits.
No shop we checked sells the Epic MAX new, and used it costs a fraction of a new Quantum Max. It also scores higher on our method: Callaway rated its forgiveness Max, and sells the Quantum Max as its most versatile driver. Choose it for a forgiving head with draw help on a small budget; choose the Quantum Max for the newer face.

How the 4.0 adds up
The forgiveness score is our reading of what Callaway publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.
| Part | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Head | 4 | A maximum-forgiveness driver head, the most forgiving kind Callaway made. |
| Forgiveness score | 4.0 | of 5 |
Draw help, lofts, flex and hand don't change the score. They decide which version fits you, and the picks for a slice or a slow swing use them.
