Srixon ZX7 irons

Players, 1.0 of 5 for forgiveness

Srixon's forged players iron of 2021, the first ZX7: a compact head with a thin topline, a narrow 17.1 mm sole and 2.9 mm of offset at the 7-iron, a 32° 7-iron, and tungsten in the toe of the long and mid irons. Srixon no longer sells the ZX7 new; the ZX7 Mk II replaced it, and the ZXi7 replaced the ZX7 Mk II.

Choose it if

  • You find the middle of the face nearly every time and want control from a compact head.
  • You play left-handed: it was made left-handed.

Choose something else if

  • You need a senior flex: PING G740, senior (A) flex in stock, 5.0 of 5.
  • For more help on a mishit, the ZX5 of the same year had a wider sole and more offset, and Srixon's ZXiR is today's game improvement iron.

What changed in the ZXi7

Srixon followed the ZX7 with the ZX7 Mk II, then the ZXi7. Its tables give all three the same lofts and lies from the 3-iron to the AW (a 32° 7-iron, a 46° PW), and the ZXi7 adds a 57° SW. The ZX7's offset is within a tenth of a millimetre of the ZXi7's, club for club (2.9 mm at the 7-iron against 2.8). Every ZXi7 club reads a quarter inch longer in Srixon's table because Srixon changed how it measures length, not the clubs. The ZX7 is forged from 1020 carbon steel with tungsten in the toe of the 3- to 7-irons; the ZXi7 is forged in a softer S15C steel with tungsten added, and Srixon calls both soles narrow. The stock shaft moved from Nippon's Modus3 Tour 120, in stiff or extra stiff, to True Temper's Dynamic Gold Mid 115, in regular or stiff.

A ZX7 set is bought used now, for far less than a new ZXi7 with the same lofts. Choose a used ZX7 if you strike it well and find one in your hand and flex; a used ZX7 Mk II for the same lofts in the newer head; the ZXi7 for a new set, or for a regular-flex shaft as stock.

After the approach wedge (AW, 51°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 5°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering.

ZX7: the questions buyers ask

Is the Srixon ZX7 forgiving?
Hardly: no set here scores lower. It is Srixon's players iron, with 2.9 mm of offset at the 7-iron and a 32° 7-iron. It scores 1.0 of 5 on our reading of what Srixon publishes about it; the most forgiving iron sets we cover score 5.0.
Who is the ZX7 for?
It suits good strikers who want control from a compact head more than help on a mishit.
Does the ZX7 come in senior or ladies flex?
No. Srixon listed stiff (S) and extra stiff (X).
Is the ZX7 sold left-handed?
Left-handed from the 3-iron to the PW; the 51° AW is right-handed only.
What are the ZX7 lofts?
3-iron 20°, 4-iron 22°, 5-iron 25°, 6-iron 28°, 7-iron 32°, 8-iron 36°, 9-iron 41°, PW 46°, AW 51°, as Srixon published them. The full table with lie, length and offset is above.
Which clubs come in a ZX7 set?
Sold by the club: the 3-iron to PW in either hand and a 51° AW for right-handers. Srixon's tables give the ZX7 Mk II the same loft, lie and length in every one of those clubs, on the same stock Modus3 Tour 120 shaft, so a used set short of a club can take a Mk II of the same number.
How much does the ZX7 cost?
Srixon no longer sells it new. Used from $396.99 at 2nd Swing Golf, checked 31 Oct. In average condition or better, from $499.99. Prices change; the seller's page has today's.

How the 1.0 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what Srixon publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.

The parts of the forgiveness score
PartPointsWhy
Head class 1 Players: a compact head built for control, the least forgiving class of iron we score.
Offset +0 2.9 mm at the 7-iron, below our 4.5 mm mark.
Sole +0 Srixon describes the sole ("17.1 mm across at the 7-iron") but not as wide.
Forgiveness score1.0of 5

The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is.

ConstructionA forged 1020 carbon steel body with a compact blade shape and a thin 6.0 mm topline. Tungsten in the toe of the 3- to 7-irons steadies the head on a mishit, and the grooves of the 8-iron to PW are sharper and deeper for more spin into the green.
