Choose it if

  • You often catch it thin or heavy and want the most help an iron gives.
  • You catch the ground before the ball: the sole is wide, so it skids instead of digging.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both are stock.

Choose something else if

  • Its 7-iron is a strong 28°. If you need more height, compare the PXG Wildcat (32°) or the Srixon ZXiR HL (32.5°); if you strike it well and want a slimmer head, the G440.

What changed from the G730

The same 28° 7-iron, the same lofts from the 6-iron to the 56° wedge, the same lengths and the same set: 5-iron to PW, UW, 50° and 56°. By PING's tables the G740's 5-iron is half a degree stronger (21° against 21.5°), its 5- to 9-irons sit 1° more upright (a 63° lie at the 7-iron against 62°), its irons carry about a degree more bounce, and its offset at the 7-iron is 4.8 mm against the G730's 5.1 mm. PING also gives the G740 a new PurFlex cavity badge, and its shaft list moves from the AWT 2.0 and ALTA CB Black to the AWT 3.0 and ALTA CB Blue.

PING now builds the G730 only as fill-in or replacement clubs, so a new set comes from a shop's last stock and most are bought used. It scores the same as the G740 here, for less new or used; this page shows both prices. Choose the G740 for a whole set built to order in your lie, shaft and flex.

PING G730 vs G740 irons, head to head

What changed from the G710

The G740 is stronger through the set: a 28° 7-iron against 29.5°, a 40° pitching wedge against 44° and a 45° UW against 49°. It drops the 4-iron and swaps the 54° SW for 50° and 56° wedges. Its irons sit a degree more upright (63° against 62° at the 7-iron) with about a degree more bounce from the 5- to the 8-iron, the lengths match from the 7-iron down, and its offset at the 7-iron is 4.8 mm against the G710's 5.1 mm. The G710's face is maraging steel; the G730 that followed it has a heat-treated 17-4 stainless face behind a PurFlex cavity badge, and the G740 keeps the badge.

PING's last copy of its G710 page, in September 2025, offered irons only as fill-in or replacement clubs for owners with a G710 serial number, and the page is now gone, so a used set is the way to buy one. It suits a slower swing that wants PING's offset with weaker lofts than the G740's; choose the G740 for a new set built to order in your lie, shaft and flex.

56° wedge 56° 65.3° 35.25 in 0.08 in 12°

After the 50° wedge: with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 6°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The PING G740 is sold in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.
