Choose the G440 if a slice is part of your miss; choose the Elyte if you swing at average speed or faster and want less offset at address. For a slower swing, PING's G440 HL is the same head in a lighter build.
Elyte $849.99 · G440 $999, each with its shop and checked date
Two game improvement irons with nearly the same lofts: by the makers' tables they match from the 4-iron to the AW or UW (a 29° 7-iron and a 42° PW in both), but for the 6-iron, half a degree stronger on the Elyte. The G440 has more offset at the 7-iron (4.6 mm against 3.0 mm), which gives the face more time to square up, and scores 3.5 of 5 against the Elyte's 3. The Elyte has a three-part sole with a sharper leading edge, and Callaway made it for average to faster swing speeds; PING made the G440's 4-, 5- and 6-irons longer than the G430's for a higher launch. The G440 is built by the club and also comes in extra stiff; the Elyte is sold as sets or single clubs.
A forgiving game improvement iron with what PING calls a players-style look: 4.6 mm of offset and a 29° 7-iron. For a slow swing, the G440 HL is the same head in a lighter build.
Fits golfers who make decent contact and want help on the misses with a slimmer head.
Choose the G740 instead if thin and heavy strikes are your main miss: it has the bigger, wider-soled head. For a lighter build that suits a slower swing, look at the G440 HL.
A forgiving game improvement iron with what PING calls a players-style look: 4.6 mm of offset and a 29° 7-iron. For a slow swing, the G440 HL is the same head in a lighter build.
The G740 is PING's bigger, more forgiving head: PING gives it a wider sole, a longer blade and a thicker topline, slightly more offset at the 7-iron (4.8 mm against 4.6 mm) and a lie 1° more upright.
The same head with the same lofts, so the same score, 3.5 of 5: a 29° 7-iron and 4.6 mm of offset (PING prints it as 0.18" on the G440 page and 0.175" on the HL page).
The G440 replaced the G430, and the two share the figures our score reads: the same 4.6 mm of offset at the 7-iron, the same 29° 7-iron and the same lofts from the 4-iron to the 9-iron, so both score 3.5 of 5.
Two generations apart, the G425 and the G440 share the figures our score reads: a game improvement head with 4.6 mm of offset at the 7-iron, so both score 3.5 of 5.
The Elyte X is the forgiving one: Callaway rates it highest for forgiveness in the Elyte line, against high for the Elyte, with an oversized cavity back, more offset (4.0 mm at the 7-iron against 3.0 mm), a wider sole and a thicker topline.
Callaway rates them as forgiving as each other: each is its mid-size game improvement iron of the year, rated high for forgiveness on Callaway's chart, with a 29° 7-iron and a three-part sole.
The G440 is the forgiving one: PING's game improvement iron, 3.5 of 5 here, against 1 of 5 for the i240, PING's compact players' iron with a shorter blade and a thin topline.
Two Callaway game improvement irons a year apart, the Ai Smoke the older, made for the same golfer, with an average to faster swing; Callaway's charts rate both High for forgiveness, both score 3 of 5 here, and its Quantum Max replaced both.
The G730 is the more forgiving, 5 of 5 here against the G440's 3.5: it is PING's previous super game improvement iron, with a larger head and a wider sole, where the G440 is its current game improvement iron.
