Guide
Senior flex vs regular flex
The A flex (senior, also sold as lite or amateur) is not a softer regular. It is a different shaft built for a different swing speed, and it almost always comes lighter. Here is what it changes, the speed where it starts to pay, and every club in this site's table that ships with it as stock.
What flex is
Flex is how much a shaft bends under the load of a swing. Stock shafts come in five steps: L (ladies), A (senior), R (regular), S (stiff) and X (extra stiff). Makers do not agree on where the lines sit, so one company's regular can bend like another's senior, but inside one maker's stock list the order always holds. The right flex is the one that lets the shaft bend and then unload, snapping the head back to square, at the speed you actually swing. Too stiff and it never fully unloads: the face arrives open and low, the ball flies low and right for a right-hander. Too soft and it unloads early: the face arrives closed and high, the ball flies high and left.
What senior flex changes
Three things, and the shaft's bend is only one of them.
- Bend. The A flex reaches its full bend at a lower load than R, so a slower swing gets the same release a faster swing gets from regular: the face squares, the launch rises, the ball carries.
- Weight. In almost every stock line the A flex comes on a lighter graphite shaft than the regular, typically 50 to 60 grams against 60 to 70 for the regular graphite and 95 to 120 for steel. A lighter club can be swung faster for the same effort, and speed is distance. Of the 43 clubs in the table with a stock A flex, 40 list a graphite shaft; steel senior shafts are rare.
- Launch. Softer and lighter together launch higher. That matters because a slow swing's biggest distance loss is carry: a ball that lands short and runs is a ball that fell out of the sky. The senior build is a launch build first.
What it does not change is the head. A senior version of a game improvement iron has the same head, the same offset, the same sole; only the shaft, and sometimes the grip and the lofts, differ. That is why the makers sell it as a flex option on the same product rather than as a different club.
The speed where it starts to help
Age is a proxy; speed is the measurement. The usual crossovers, which every maker states a little differently:
- Driver swing under about 75 miles per hour, or a 7-iron carrying under about 120 yards: ladies (L) flex.
- Driver 75 to about 85 miles per hour, 7-iron carry 120 to about 140 yards: senior (A) flex.
- Driver 85 to 95, 7-iron 140 to 160: regular.
- Over 95 with the driver: stiff.
Most golfers overestimate their speed and buy a flex too stiff, then wonder why the ball goes right. If you can get on a launch monitor at a shop, one minute of driver swings settles it; if not, the carry distance of your 7-iron on a flat hole is a good enough proxy. A 65-year-old who still carries a 7-iron 150 yards belongs in regular.
Weight matters as much as flex
Because the senior shaft comes light, the whole club comes light, and for many slower swings the weight does more than the bend. A 55 gram graphite shaft in an iron is about half the weight of the steel most regular sets are sold with. If you have lost distance and the ball flight is fine, the first thing to try is a lighter shaft in your current flex; if the flight is low and right as well, go to the A flex with the light shaft. Several makers sell a lightweight build of a whole set (lighter head, lighter shaft, lighter grip) aimed at exactly this; the cues column on the senior clubs page names them.
What it feels like, and the two wrong reasons
A senior shaft in the right hands feels like the club is doing more of the work: you feel the head load and release, the ball comes off higher, and you swing easier because you can. In the wrong hands, a fast swinger with an A flex, it feels loose and whippy, the ball starts left and the distance control goes.
Two reasons not to buy senior flex: because of your age, which is not a measurement, and because a club felt "easy" in a shop swing, which is usually the lighter weight talking, not the flex. Two reasons to buy it: your driver speed is under about 85 miles per hour, or your good shots fly low and right and you have not changed your swing.
A five-minute test with clubs you already own
Take your 7-iron to a flat hole or a range with real yardages. Hit ten balls. Note the carry of the six best (throw out the two worst and the two flukes) and the direction. Under 140 yards, or a consistent low-right flight with a decent strike, and the A flex is worth a fitting; over 150 and it is not. If you own a hybrid or a wood in a softer flex than your irons, hit both back to back: the club that launches higher and finishes straighter is telling you where your flex sits.
Every club in the table with a stock senior flex
43 of the 66 clubs whose makers publish a flex list ship with an A flex as a stock option; 16 ship in regular and stiff only. By type:

Every figure for these clubs is read from the maker's own product page, with a shop's new price standing in where the maker publishes none and the club page saying which (prices read 2026-09-06); a cell that says not published means nobody publishes it and we do not guess. Sorted by price, cheapest first. How we compare.
Ladies flex is the same idea one step further
The L flex is softer and lighter again than the A, built for driver speeds under about 75 miles per hour, and it is not only for women: a slow-swinging senior man is often better fitted in L than in A, and a fast-swinging woman in regular. 13 clubs in the table ship with an L flex as stock. The women's lines add a shorter standard length and a lighter grip on top of the shaft; the women's page lists both kinds.
