Choose the Elyte if you swing at average speed or faster and want a sharper edge through the turf.
Choose the Qi if your irons miss to the right.
Elyte $849.99 · Qi $899.99, each with its shop and checked date
Both are game improvement irons that their makers rate High for forgiveness, a step below the Elyte X and the Qi HL, and both score 3 of 5 here. The Elyte has 3.0 mm of offset at the 7-iron and a three-part sole with a sharper leading edge, and Callaway made it for average to faster swing speeds. TaylorMade prints no offset for the Qi, a part-hollow Cap Back head whose face it built against the right miss. The Qi's lofts are a degree stronger from the 5- to the 8-iron (a 28° 7-iron against 29°); the two meet at a 37° 9-iron, and the Qi's PW is a degree weaker. Both come in senior, regular and stiff flex in either hand, and the Qi in a ladies flex as well.
TaylorMade's game improvement iron before the Qi Max, with the same 28° 7-iron. TaylorMade says it built the face against the right miss that most game improvement irons favour, and its own chart rates its forgiveness High, as it rates the Qi Max's.

The Elyte X is the forgiving one: Callaway rates it highest for forgiveness in the Elyte line, against high for the Elyte, with an oversized cavity back, more offset (4.0 mm at the 7-iron against 3.0 mm), a wider sole and a thicker topline.
Callaway rates them as forgiving as each other: each is its mid-size game improvement iron of the year, rated high for forgiveness on Callaway's chart, with a 29° 7-iron and a three-part sole.
TaylorMade's own chart answers it: the Qi is a game improvement iron rated High for forgiveness, the P790 a players distance iron rated Mid-High, so the Qi forgives more, and it scores 3 of 5 here against the P790's 2.
Two game improvement irons with nearly the same lofts: by the makers' tables they match from the 4-iron to the AW or UW (a 29° 7-iron and a 42° PW in both), but for the 6-iron, half a degree stronger on the Elyte.
Two Callaway game improvement irons a year apart, the Ai Smoke the older, made for the same golfer, with an average to faster swing; Callaway's charts rate both High for forgiveness, both score 3 of 5 here, and its Quantum Max replaced both.
