Choose it if

  • You often catch it thin or heavy and want the most help an iron gives.
  • You catch the ground before the ball: the sole is wide, so it skids instead of digging.
  • You want a higher flight: the 31° 7-iron is weaker than most.
  • You want to spend less: $962.50 is in the cheapest third of the 43 we price.

Choose something else if

  • You play left-handed: PING G740, sold left-handed, 5.0 of 5.

What changed from the JPX923 Hot Metal HL

Mizuno prints the same lofts for both, from a 25° 5-iron to the 55° sand wedge (a 31° 7-iron), and nearly the same sole (23.9 mm across the 7-iron against 23.7 mm). The JPX925 Hot Metal HL adds a 22° 4-iron, is a quarter inch longer from the 5-iron to the gap wedge, half a degree more upright from the 5-iron to the pitching wedge (a full degree in the gap and sand wedges), and has slightly less offset (5.7 mm at the 7-iron against 5.9 mm). Mizuno also rebuilt the face and put tungsten low in the 4- to 7-irons. Both are right-handed only.

New JPX923 HL sets are gone, so the choice is a used 923 or a new 925. Choose a used JPX923 HL for the same lofts for far less, if a set comes in your flex; choose the JPX925 HL for a new set in your shaft and flex, with a 4-iron if you carry one.

After the gap wedge (GW, 50°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 6°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.
