PING G400 fairway wood
Maximum forgiveness, 4.0 of 5
PING's G400 fairway wood of 2017, in four lofts from 14.5° to 23.5°, with a denser back weight and an ultra-thin crown that PING says raise the MOI for extreme forgiveness. Golf Discount still sold it new on 16 Oct 2026, as a right-handed 9-wood only; the G410 followed it, and the G440 MAX is the newest model in its line.

What changed in the G440 MAX
PING followed the G400 fairway wood with the G410 in 2019, then the G425 MAX, the G430 MAX and the G440 MAX. The lengths and average lies of the 3, 5, 7 and 9-woods are the same. The G440 MAX's lofts are a little weaker (15°, 19°, 21° and 24° against 14.5°, 17.5°, 20.5° and 23.5°), and it adds a 17° 4-wood. Its heads are larger (186cc against 181cc in the 3-wood), its face is taller, and a lighter hosel and a carbon-wrapped crown lower the centre of gravity where the G400 has a thin steel crown. The G400's hosel changes the loft by 1° either way; the G440 MAX's by 1.5°, and the lie up to 3° flatter. The G440 MAX also comes in an HL build with a lighter shaft for slower swings.
PING no longer lists the G400 fairway wood, but Golf Discount still sold it new on 16 Oct as a right-handed 9-wood only, and used ones in the other lofts cost less. It suits a golfer who wants PING's high-MOI fairway wood for the least money; choose the G440 MAX for a new club in any loft or either hand, the 4-wood, the wider loft adjustment or the HL build for a slower swing.

How the 4.0 adds up
The forgiveness score is our reading of what PING publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.
| Part | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Head | 4 | A maximum-forgiveness fairway wood head, the most forgiving kind PING made. |
| Forgiveness score | 4.0 | of 5 |
Draw help, lofts, flex and hand don't change the score. They decide which version fits you, and the picks for a slice or a slow swing use them.
