TaylorMade P7MC (2023) irons

Players, 1.0 of 5 for forgiveness

TaylorMade's forged cavity back of 2023, before the P7CB: minimal offset (2.1 mm at the 7-iron), perimeter weighting and a 34° 7-iron. TaylorMade built it for the best ball strikers with "a hint of forgiveness", and no set we score forgives less. TaylorMade no longer sells the P7MC (2023) new, and the P7CB replaced it.

Choose it if

  • You find the middle of the face nearly every time and want control from a compact head.
  • You play left-handed: it was made left-handed.

Choose something else if

  • You need a senior flex: PING G740, senior (A) flex in stock, 5.0 of 5.
  • For more help on a mishit, TaylorMade rates the P770 a step more forgiving than the P7CB that replaced this set, though both score 1.0 of 5 here; its Qi Max irons forgive more on both counts.

What changed in the P7CB

By TaylorMade's tables the P7CB keeps the P7MC's 3-, 4- and 5-iron lofts and every lie and length, and is a degree stronger from the 6-iron to the PW (a 33° 7-iron against 34°, and a degree and a half in the 9-iron), with a 51° AW added. TaylorMade names a co-forged tungsten weight in the P7CB and prints no offset for it (2.1 mm at the P7MC's 7-iron). Its stock shafts move from KBS Tour steel in stiff or extra stiff to True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115, also made in regular, or Nippon's Modus Tour 120. National Club Golfer measured the P7CB's sole 2 mm wider.

TaylorMade no longer sells the P7MC, so a set is bought used, for much less than a new P7CB, and both score the same here. Choose the P7MC for nearly the same lofts for less, if a used set comes in your hand and flex; choose the P7CB for a new set built to your lie, shaft and flex, with a matching AW.

PW 47° 64° 35.75 in 1.5 mm

After the pitching wedge (PW, 47°): with a 56° sand wedge, the 9° gap leaves room for one more wedge, at about 52°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering.

How the 1.0 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what TaylorMade publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.

The parts of the forgiveness score
PartPointsWhy
Head class 1 Players: a compact head built for control, the least forgiving class of iron we score.
Offset +0 2.1 mm at the 7-iron, below our 4.5 mm mark.
Sole +0 TaylorMade doesn't publish a sole width, so the sole earns no point.
Forgiveness score1.0of 5

The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is. TaylorMade does not publish a sole width.
