TaylorMade P7CB irons

Players, 1.0 of 5 for forgiveness

TaylorMade's forged cavity back for good strikers: a compact blade, a thin top line and a co-forged tungsten weight, with a 33° 7-iron. TaylorMade's own chart rates its forgiveness low-mid, a step below the P770, and no set we score forgives less. Less help than TaylorMade's P790 (2.0 of 5): choose the P790 if you want more help on a mishit.

What changed from the P7MC (2023)

By TaylorMade's tables the P7CB keeps the P7MC's 3-, 4- and 5-iron lofts and every lie and length, and is a degree stronger from the 6-iron to the PW (a 33° 7-iron against 34°, and a degree and a half in the 9-iron), with a 51° AW added. TaylorMade names a co-forged tungsten weight in the P7CB and prints no offset for it (2.1 mm at the P7MC's 7-iron). Its stock shafts move from KBS Tour steel in stiff or extra stiff to True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115, also made in regular, or Nippon's Modus Tour 120. National Club Golfer measured the P7CB's sole 2 mm wider.

TaylorMade no longer sells the P7MC, so a set is bought used, for much less than a new P7CB, and both score the same here. Choose the P7MC for nearly the same lofts for less, if a used set comes in your hand and flex; choose the P7CB for a new set built to your lie, shaft and flex, with a matching AW.

TaylorMade P7MC vs P7CB irons, head to head

After the approach wedge (AW, 51°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 5°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Mixing P7CB and P770 irons

TaylorMade's combo guide mixes the two sets four ways, with the more forgiving P770 in the long irons and the P7CB in the rest: from the P770 3- and 4-iron at level 1 to P770 irons down to the 7-iron at level 4. Where a mix would leave an uneven loft gap, TaylorMade bends a club stronger or weaker. The lofts below are its stock lofts with those bends.

Left-handed, these mixes stop at the PW: TaylorMade makes the P7CB AW right-handed only.

Mixing P7MB and P7CB irons

TaylorMade's combo guide mixes the two sets three ways (its levels 3 and 4 are the same mix), with the more forgiving P7CB in the long irons and the P7MB in the rest: from the P7CB 3- and 4-iron at level 1 to P7CB irons down to the 6-iron at level 4. Every mix keeps the P7MB's own lofts, from 20° to 47°.

How the 1.0 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what TaylorMade publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.

The parts of the forgiveness score
PartPointsWhy
Head class 1 Players: a compact head built for control, the least forgiving class of iron we score.
Offset +0 TaylorMade doesn't publish a 7-iron offset, so offset earns no point.
Sole +0 TaylorMade doesn't publish a sole width, so the sole earns no point.
Forgiveness score1.0of 5

The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is. TaylorMade does not publish a 7-iron offset or a sole width.
