Head to head

PING G730 vs G740 irons

Choose the G730 for the same help for less, from a shop's last new sets or used.

Choose the G740 for a whole set built to order, since PING now makes the G730 only as fill-in or replacement clubs.

G730 $1,189.99G740 $1,299.99, each with its shop and checked date

The G740 replaced the G730 as PING's most forgiving iron, and both score 5 of 5: each has a wider sole, a 28° 7-iron and close to the same offset at the 7-iron (5.1 mm on the G730, 4.8 mm on the G740). By PING's tables the lofts match from the 6-iron down, the G740's 5-iron is half a degree stronger, its irons sit 1° more upright and carry about a degree more bounce, and the lengths and the set (5-iron to PW, UW, 50° and 56°) are the same. PING gives the G740 a new PurFlex cavity badge and lists the AWT 3.0 and ALTA CB Blue shafts where the G730 had the AWT 2.0 and ALTA CB Black.

Its 7-iron is a strong 28°. If you need more height, compare the PXG Wildcat (32°) or the Srixon ZXiR HL (32.5°); if you strike it well and want a slimmer head, the G440.
