Head to head

PING i540 vs i240 irons

Choose the i540 for a players' head with stronger lofts.

Choose the i240 if you find the middle of the face nearly every time and want a traditional loft in each club.

i540 $1,499.75i240 $1,400, each with its shop and checked date

Neither is PING's forgiving iron, and the i540 forgives a little more: it is a players' distance iron, 2 of 5 here, where the i240 is a compact players' iron, 1 of 5, the lowest of any set we score. The i540 has a forged face with tungsten weighting and a narrow sole; the i240 has a shorter blade and a thin topline, with a lighter badge and an elastomer insert that move weight to the edges. Their offset is close, 2.5 mm against 2.3 mm at the 7-iron, at the same length and the same 62° lie. The real difference is loft: the i540's 7-iron is 29° and the i240's 33°, and the gap runs through the set to a 42° PW against 45°, so the same number flies lower on the i540 and higher on the i240. The i240 also comes as a 3-iron, at the 19° of the i540's 4-iron. Both are sold left- or right-handed in soft regular to extra stiff flex. If thin and toe strikes cost you the green, PING's G440 gives more help than either.

    PING i540

A players distance iron with a forged face, a narrow sole and 2.5 mm of offset at the 7-iron, built for speed. It gives less help on a mishit than PING's G-series heads.

    PING i240

PING's compact players iron: a thin topline, 2.3 mm of offset and a 33° 7-iron. PING added some forgiveness behind the face, but it is built for good strikers, and no set we score forgives less.
