Choose the P770 for a new set with a little more launch from the long irons.
Choose the i230 for the same lofts bought used, or the i240 for PING's current version.
Two compact players irons with nearly the same lofts: a 33° 7-iron, a 45° PW and a 50° wedge in both, and the P770 half a degree stronger in the 4-, 5- and 6-irons. TaylorMade's chart rates the P770 mid for forgiveness, a step above its P7CB, and it sets a tungsten weight low in the long irons to launch them higher. PING made the i230 for distance control and tight dispersion, with 2.3 mm of offset at the 7-iron and tungsten in the toe and tip. TaylorMade prints no offset for the P770, so both score 1 of 5 here. PING now builds the i230 only as fill-in or replacement clubs, and its i240 replaced it; the P770 is sold new. The i230 also came in a senior flex.
TaylorMade's compact forged iron: a thinner top line than the P790 and a 33° 7-iron. TaylorMade's own chart rates its forgiveness mid, a step below the P790, and no set we score forgives less.
PING's players iron before the i240: a compact head, 2.3 mm of offset and a 33° 7-iron, the same lofts and offsets as the i240's. Tungsten weights in the toe and tip add a little help on a mishit, but it is built for good strikers, and no set we score forgives less.

The P790 is the more forgiving: TaylorMade's own chart rates it mid-high for forgiveness against mid for the P770, and files it as a players distance iron where the P770 is a modern players iron.
The P770 is the more forgiving of the two: TaylorMade rates it mid for forgiveness against low-mid for the P7CB, and files it as a modern players iron where the P7CB is a players iron.
Both are compact PING irons of the same year, and both are now bought used: PING builds the i230 only as fill-in or replacement clubs and no longer sells the i525.
