Callaway Big Bertha (2023) irons

Super game improvement, 5.0 of 5 for forgiveness

Callaway's super game improvement iron of 2023, from the family it called its easiest to hit clubs: wider soles and thicker top lines, 6.9 mm of offset at the 7-iron and a strong 27° 7-iron. Callaway's own store still sold it new by the club in June 2026, and the Quantum Max OS is the current model in its line.

Choose it if

  • You often catch it thin or heavy and want the most help an iron gives.
  • You catch the ground before the ball: the sole is wide, so it skids instead of digging.
  • You play left-handed: it was made left-handed.
  • You need a softer shaft: it came in Light, the flex Callaway's buying guide calls senior.

Choose something else if

  • Choose the Quantum Max OS instead if you want a higher flight from your irons: Callaway's current oversized iron has a weaker 29° 7-iron.

What changed in the Quantum Max OS

Both are Callaway's super game improvement iron of their year. The Quantum Max OS has a weaker 7-iron (29° against 27°) and less offset in the 7-iron (4.80 mm against 6.9 mm), and it has an undercut cavity and a three-part Tri-Sole; Callaway gave the Big Bertha wider soles and thicker top lines.

Used sets cost about half the price of a new Quantum Max OS; this page shows the used price. On Callaway's figures the Big Bertha has more offset and a stronger 7-iron, so it suits a golfer who slices and wants distance for little; choose the Quantum Max OS for a higher flight or a new set in your hand, shaft and flex.

After the approach wedge (AW, 47°): with a 56° sand wedge, the 9° gap leaves room for one more wedge, at about 52°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.
