What changed in the Quantum Max
Both are Callaway's game improvement iron of their year, rated High for forgiveness on Callaway's own chart. The Quantum Max has a degree weaker 7-iron (29° against 28°) and more offset (3.71 mm at the 7-iron against 2.8 mm), and it replaces the Ai Smoke's hollow body with an undercut cavity and its Dynamic Sole with a three-part Tri-Sole.
GlobalGolf still sells the Ai Smoke new for less than the Quantum Max, and used sets cost less again. Both get the same score from us; the Quantum Max's extra offset gives the face a little more time to square. Choose the Ai Smoke for strong lofts and a hollow body for less; choose the Quantum Max for a new set in every hand and flex.

How the 3.0 adds up
The forgiveness score is our reading of what Callaway publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.
| Part | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Head class | 3 | Game improvement: a forgiving head, slimmer than super game improvement. |
| Offset | +0 | 2.8 mm at the 7-iron, below our 4.5 mm mark. |
| Sole | +0 | Callaway doesn't publish a sole width, so the sole earns no point. |
| Forgiveness score | 3.0 | of 5 |
The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is. Callaway does not publish a sole width.
