Choose it if

  • You make decent contact and want help on the misses from a slimmer head.
  • You catch the ground before the ball: the sole is wide, so it skids instead of digging.
  • You want a higher flight: the 31° 7-iron is weaker than most.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both are stock.

Compare these 3 in full · TaylorMade Qi Max vs Qi Max HL irons

What changed from the Qi HL

TaylorMade's chart rates both Highest for forgiveness, and both are the light, high-launch version of its game improvement iron. They share the 23.5° 5-iron and the 44.5° pitching wedge; the Qi Max HL's middle irons are weaker (a 31° 7-iron against 30°, a 35.5° 8-iron against 34° and a 40° 9-iron against 38.5°). TaylorMade gives the Qi Max HL a larger face, a wider sole, a face that flexes evenly across its whole area and REAX shafts by KBS, and prints 4.3 mm of offset at its 7-iron; it prints no offset or sole width for the Qi HL.

Used sets cost much less than a new Qi Max HL; this page shows the used price. The Qi Max HL scores half a point more here only for the wider sole TaylorMade gives it. Choose the Qi HL for the same light, high-launch build for less; choose the Qi Max HL if you often hit it heavy, or for a new set in your hand, shaft and flex.

What changed from the Stealth HD

Both start at the 5-iron with a 23.5° loft and end the set at a 44.5° pitching wedge. The Qi Max HL's middle irons are weaker: a 31° 7-iron against 30°, a 35.5° 8-iron against 34° and a 40° 9-iron against 38.5°, with almost the same offset (4.3 mm at the 7-iron against 4.2 mm). TaylorMade built the Stealth HD with a draw-biased face; it sells the Qi Max HL on a larger face, a wider sole and lighter shafts, and does not call it draw-biased.

No shop we checked sells the Stealth HD new, and a used set costs far less than a new Qi Max HL. It also scores higher on our method, because TaylorMade called it max game improvement and its sole wide. Choose it if a slice or a weak right shot is your miss and you want TaylorMade's draw help for little money; choose the Qi Max HL for a new set in your hand and flex.

AW 50° 64.5° 35.5 in 2.2 mm
SW 55° 64.5° 35.25 in 1.4 mm

After the approach wedge (AW, 50°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 6°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The TaylorMade Qi Max HL is sold in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.
