Choose it if

  • You want some help on mishits, short of the maker's most forgiving head.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both were stock builds.

Choose something else if

  • Choose the G400 Max instead if you want the most forgiving G400: PING added it in 2018, a larger head with an MOI over 9,900.

What changed in the G440 MAX

PING followed the G400 with the G410 Plus in 2019, then the G425 MAX, the G430 MAX and the G440 MAX. The G400 is a 445cc head with a combined MOI over 9,000; PING named no forgiveness class for it, so it scores 3.0 here, and the G400 Max it added in 2018 had the higher MOI. The G440 MAX is a 460cc head that PING calls the most forgiving G440 model (4.0 here). It adds a 12° loft to the 9° and 10.5°, a back weight that can be set to draw or fade, a carbon crown, a hosel that adjusts loft by 1.5° each way instead of 1° and can set the lie up to 3° flatter, and a 46-inch standard length against 45¾.

PING no longer takes new orders for the G400, and used ones cost a fraction of a new G440 MAX. Choose a used G400 for a high-MOI PING head for little money; choose the G400 Max for more forgiveness from the same year, or the G440 MAX for the larger head, the 12° loft and the movable weight.
