Super game improvement, 4.0 of 5 for forgiveness

Cleveland's super game improvement iron of 2021: hollow, hybrid-style heads in every club, the highest MOI Cleveland had put in a hybrid-iron, 2.0 mm of offset at the 7-iron and a 30° 7-iron. Cleveland no longer sells the men's Launcher XL Halo new, and the HALO XL Full-Face replaced it.

Choose it if

  • You often catch it thin or heavy and want the most help an iron gives.
  • You want a higher flight: the 30° 7-iron is weaker than most.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both were stock builds.

Choose something else if

  • Choose Cleveland's Launcher XL of the same year instead if you want an iron-shaped head with more offset against a slice: 3.4 mm at the 7-iron.

What changed in the HALO XL Full-Face

Cleveland's tables give the Launcher XL Halo and the HALO XL Full-Face that replaced it the same lies and lengths in every club and the same lofts in the 4- and 5-irons. From the 6-iron down the HALO XL Full-Face is up to a degree and a half stronger (29° against 30° at the 7-iron), with a 48° GW and a 54° SW in place of a 49.5° DW and a 54.5° SW, and the offset stays within a tenth of a millimetre, club for club. The HALO XL Full-Face adds grooves across the whole face, a striking area Cleveland calls 20 percent larger and two white alignment grooves at the bottom of the face. Cleveland called the Launcher XL Halo a super game improvement iron and lists the HALO XL Full-Face among its game improvement irons, so the two sit in different classes here.

A Launcher XL Halo set is bought used now. Choose one for the same hybrid-style head, lies and lengths for much less, if a set comes in your hand and flex with every club you need; choose the HALO XL Full-Face for a new set, for grooves across the whole face, or for slightly stronger lofts from the 6-iron down.

9-iron 39° 64° 36.25 in 1.9 mm
PW 44° 64.5° 36 in 1.75 mm
DW 49.5° 65° 35.75 in 1.25 mm
SW 54.5° 65° 35.75 in 0.6 mm

After the DW: with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 6.5°, just over the 4° to 6° step; a wedge in between would leave two steps under 4°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The Cleveland Launcher XL Halo came in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.

Launcher XL Halo: the questions buyers ask

Yes. It is Cleveland's super game improvement iron, with 2.0 mm of offset at the 7-iron and a 30° 7-iron. It scores 4.0 of 5 on our reading of what Cleveland publishes about it; the most forgiving iron sets we cover score 5.0.
Who is the Launcher XL Halo for?
It suits golfers who often catch it thin or heavy and want the most help an iron gives.
Does the Launcher XL Halo come in senior or ladies flex?

How much does the Launcher XL Halo cost?

How the 4.0 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what Cleveland publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.
