Cobra KING TEC X irons

Game improvement, 3.0 of 5 for forgiveness

Cobra's hollow game improvement iron of 2024, in a slimmer shape than most: a thin forged face insert, 70 g of tungsten in the toe, 3.0 mm of offset at the 7-iron and a strong 27° 7-iron. Cobra built it to give game improvement help in a head that looks like a better player's. Cobra no longer sells the KING TEC X new, and its irons today are the KING, the more forgiving KING MAX and the 3DP sets.

Choose it if

  • You make decent contact and want help on the misses from a slimmer head.
  • You need a softer shaft: it came in a stock senior flex.
  • You want to spend less: $799 is in the cheapest third of the 43 we price.

Choose something else if

  • For more help on thin and heavy strikes, Cobra's KING MAX has a weaker 29.5° 7-iron and 5.2 mm of offset.

What changed in the KING MAX

Cobra's irons on sale today are the KING, the KING MAX and its 3DP sets; we do not cover the KING. The KING MAX we cover is its forgiving version: 2.5° weaker at the 7-iron (29.5° against the KING TEC X's 27°), with 5.2 mm of offset there against 3.0 mm, a 3D-printed medallion, a floating 80 g weight and a sole Cobra reshaped with more bounce at the leading edge. The KING TEC X is a slimmer hollow head with 70 g of tungsten in the toe and softer foam inside.

Cobra no longer sells the KING TEC X, but Golf Discount still has it new for less than a KING MAX, and used sets cost less again. Choose the KING TEC X for strong lofts in a slimmer head if you already strike your irons fairly well; choose the KING MAX for more help on thin and heavy strikes and a higher flight.

After the gap wedge (GW, 48°): with a 56° sand wedge, the 8° gap leaves room for one more wedge, at about 52°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The Cobra KING TEC X came in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.

How the 3.0 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what Cobra publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.
