PING G15 irons

Super game improvement, 4.5 of 5 for forgiveness

PING's 2009 iron, which it called "a maximum-forgiveness iron": a stainless steel cavity back with a wider sole for a higher launch, weight moved to the toe for mis-hits, and a 32° 7-iron. PING no longer sells the G15 new, and the G440 is the current model in its line.

Choose it if

  • You often catch it thin or heavy and want the most help an iron gives.
  • Your iron shots start right or fly low: 6.1 mm of offset gives the face more time to square.
  • You want a higher flight: the 32° 7-iron is weaker than most.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both were stock builds.

Choose something else if

  • If you strike it fairly well and want a slimmer head, look at the G25 that followed it in 2013: PING's game improvement iron, with less offset.

What changed in the G440

The G440 is stronger and longer through the set: a 29° 7-iron against the G15's 32°, a 42° pitching wedge against 45°, and a 4-iron an inch longer (39.25 inches against 38.25). The G15 has more offset (0.24 inches at the 7-iron against 0.18) and less bounce in the irons (6° at the 7-iron against 9°), and was sold from a 3-iron to a 58° lob wedge. PING's G25 of 2013, which we also cover, kept the G15's lofts, lies and lengths club for club with a little less offset; PING now calls the G440 game improvement, and its super game improvement iron today is the G740.

PING no longer sells the G15 and we found no shop selling it new, but used sets cost a fraction of a new G440 set. Choose a used G15 for a lot of offset and forgiveness for very little money, if a set comes in your flex with the clubs you need; choose the G440 for a new set built to your fitting, with stronger lofts, or the G740, PING's super game improvement iron today, for more help on thin and heavy strikes. If you would rather keep the G15's higher flight than gain distance, PING also builds the G440 in what it calls Retro Spec lofts, with a 31° 7-iron in place of 29°.

After the utility wedge (UW, 50°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 6°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The PING G15 came in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.

How the 4.5 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what PING publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.

Buying used, ask for the set's colour code: PING built the G15 in 12 lie angles, each marked by a colour, so a set fitted for someone else may sit too upright or too flat for you. Read the head too: the i15, launched beside it in 2009, is PING's mid-size iron for better players who want more control.
