Choose it if

  • You make decent contact and want help on the misses from a slimmer head.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both were stock builds.

Choose something else if

  • If you want more help than a slim head gives, Srixon's ZXiR HL is its most forgiving iron today.

What changed in the ZXi4

Srixon's tables give the ZX4 Mk II and the ZXi4 that followed it the same lofts and lies, club for club, from a 21° 4-iron to a 56° SW (a 28.5° 7-iron). The ZXi4 has less offset (3.2 mm at the 7-iron against 3.4, 2.2 mm at the PW against 2.6, 1.0 mm at the SW against 2.0) and makes its AW left-handed too. Srixon lists it a quarter inch longer (37¼ inches at the 7-iron against 37), but says the clubs are the same length: it now measures to the USGA and R&A guidelines. Srixon's charts rate both high for forgiveness, for mid to high handicaps. The ZX4 Mk II scores 3.0 here, as the game improvement iron Srixon called it; the ZXi4 scores 2.0, as we class it with the players distance irons.

Srixon no longer sells the ZX4 Mk II new, and used sets cost far less than a new ZXi4. Choose a used ZX4 Mk II for the same lofts with a little more offset for much less, if a set comes in your hand and flex; choose the ZXi4 for a new set built to order.

After the approach wedge (AW, 49°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 7°, just over the 4° to 6° step; a wedge in between would leave two steps under 4°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The Srixon ZX4 Mk II came in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.

How the 3.0 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what Srixon publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.

The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is.
