Srixon ZXi4 irons

Players distance, 2.0 of 5 for forgiveness

A compact, hollow players distance iron with 3.2 mm of offset: more forgiving than a blade, less than Srixon's ZXiR. Less help than Srixon's ZXiR HL (4.0 of 5): choose the ZXiR HL if you want a higher flight from a slower swing.

Compare these 3 in full · Srixon ZXiR vs ZXi4 irons

What changed from the ZX5 Mk II

The ZXi5 that followed it keeps a 31° 7-iron and 3.2 mm of offset at the 7-iron; we do not cover it. The ZXi4 we cover is the family's hollow distance iron: 2.5° stronger at the 7-iron (28.5°), with the same 3.2 mm of offset, in a hollow head Srixon says gives more forgiveness in a compact shape. In the ZX Mk II family, Srixon rated the ZX5's forgiveness mid to high and the ZX4's high; our score reads only the class, offset and sole, and gives both 2.0.

Srixon no longer sells the ZX5 Mk II new. Choose a used one if you strike your irons well and want a forged cavity back; choose the ZXi4 for a new hollow-headed set with stronger lofts, or Srixon's ZXiR if you often catch it thin or heavy.

What changed from the ZX4 Mk II

Srixon's tables give the ZX4 Mk II and the ZXi4 that followed it the same lofts and lies, club for club, from a 21° 4-iron to a 56° SW (a 28.5° 7-iron). The ZXi4 has less offset (3.2 mm at the 7-iron against 3.4, 2.2 mm at the PW against 2.6, 1.0 mm at the SW against 2.0) and makes its AW left-handed too. Srixon lists it a quarter inch longer (37¼ inches at the 7-iron against 37), but says the clubs are the same length: it now measures to the USGA and R&A guidelines. Srixon's charts rate both high for forgiveness, for mid to high handicaps. The ZX4 Mk II scores 3.0 here, as the game improvement iron Srixon called it; the ZXi4 scores 2.0, as we class it with the players distance irons.

Srixon no longer sells the ZX4 Mk II new, and used sets cost far less than a new ZXi4. Choose a used ZX4 Mk II for the same lofts with a little more offset for much less, if a set comes in your hand and flex; choose the ZXi4 for a new set built to order.

What changed from the ZX4

Srixon followed the ZX4 with the ZX4 Mk II, then the ZXi4. Its tables give the ZX4 and the ZXi4 the same lofts and lies from the 4-iron to the AW (a 28.5° 7-iron), and the ZXi4 adds a 56° SW. The ZXi4 has less offset (3.2 mm at the 7-iron against 3.7, 2.2 mm at the PW against 2.8, 1.8 mm at the AW against 2.3) and a sole Srixon calls moderate, where the ZX4's was the widest of its family (23.6 mm at the 7-iron); it also makes the AW left-handed. Srixon lists the ZXi4 a quarter inch longer, but says only the way it measures length changed. The ZX4 scores 3.5 here, as the game improvement iron Srixon made it with the wide sole Srixon names; the ZXi4 scores 2.0, as we class it with the players distance irons.

Srixon no longer sells the ZX4 new, and used sets cost far less than a new ZXi4. Choose a used ZX4 for its wider sole and extra offset, if a set comes in your hand and flex; choose a used ZX4 Mk II for the same lofts with a slimmer sole, or the ZXi4 for a new set built to order.

AW 49° 63.5° 35.75 in 1.8 mm
SW 56° 63.5° 35.75 in 1 mm

After the approach wedge (AW, 49°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 7°, just over the 4° to 6° step; a wedge in between would leave two steps under 4°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering.

The Srixon ZXi4 is sold in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.
