Cobra DARKSPEED irons

Game improvement, 3.0 of 5 for forgiveness

Cobra's 2024 game improvement iron, built for distance: a hollow body filled with foam, 3.2 mm of offset and a strong 27° 7-iron. Cobra no longer sells the DARKSPEED new; the DS-ADAPT followed it in 2025 and the KING in 2026, and the KING MAX is the KING's more forgiving version.

Choose it if

  • You make decent contact and want help on the misses from a slimmer head.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both were stock builds.

Choose something else if

  • For more help on thin and heavy strikes, look at Cobra's KING MAX, with more offset and weaker lofts.

What changed in the KING MAX

Cobra followed the DARKSPEED with the DS-ADAPT in 2025 and the KING in 2026. The KING keeps the DARKSPEED's lengths and lies and its 3.2 mm of offset at the 7-iron (0.1 mm more from the 8-iron to the sand wedge), and is half a degree weaker from the 4-iron to the gap wedge (a 27.5° 7-iron against 27°); we do not cover it. The KING MAX we cover is its forgiving version: 2° weaker than the KING (a 29.5° 7-iron), with 5.2 mm of offset at the 7-iron against the DARKSPEED's 3.2 mm, a 3D-printed medallion, a floating 80 g weight and a sole Cobra reshaped with more bounce at the leading edge.

Cobra no longer sells the DARKSPEED, and used sets cost about half a new KING MAX. Choose a used DARKSPEED for strong lofts and distance if you already strike your irons fairly well; choose the KING MAX for more help on thin and heavy strikes and a higher flight.

SW 54° 65° 35.5 in 1 mm

After the gap wedge (GW, 47.5°): with a 56° sand wedge, the 8.5° gap leaves room for one more wedge, at about 52°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The Cobra DARKSPEED came in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.

How the 3.0 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what Cobra publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.

The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is. Cobra does not publish a sole width.
