Choose it if

  • You often catch it thin or heavy and want the most help an iron gives.
  • Your iron shots start right or fly low: 5.1 mm of offset gives the face more time to square.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both were stock builds.
  • You want to spend less: $799.98 is in the cheapest third of the 43 we price.

Choose something else if

  • If you strike your irons fairly well and want a slimmer head with stronger lofts, Cobra's DS-ADAPT is the same build in a smaller shape.

What changed in the KING MAX

The KING MAX replaced the DS-ADAPT MAX as Cobra's super game improvement iron. Cobra's tables keep the same lengths and lies and nearly the same offset (5.2 mm at the 7-iron against 5.1, and 0.1 mm more in each club from there down, with 7.6 mm in both 4-irons). The KING MAX is half a degree weaker from the 5-iron to the 9-iron (a 29.5° 7-iron against 29°) and a degree weaker in the wedges (a 44.5° PW against 43.5°). Cobra adds a 3D-printed medallion, a floating 80 g weight and a sole reshaped with more bounce at the leading edge.

Cobra no longer sells the DS-ADAPT MAX, but PGA TOUR Superstore still has it new for less than a KING MAX, and used sets cost far less. Choose the DS-ADAPT MAX for nearly the same head for less; choose the KING MAX for the newer head and its reshaped sole.

Head to head: Cobra DS-ADAPT vs DS-ADAPT MAX irons

Loft, lie and length, club by club

As Cobra published them
Club Loft Lie Length Offset
4-iron 21° 62.5° 39.25 in 7.6 mm
5-iron 23° 63° 38.5 in 6.7 mm
6-iron 26° 63.5° 37.75 in 5.9 mm
7-iron 29° 64° 37.25 in 5.1 mm
8-iron 33.5° 64.5° 36.75 in 4.4 mm
9-iron 38.5° 65° 36.25 in 3.7 mm
PW 43.5° 65° 36 in 3.1 mm
GW 49° 65° 35.75 in 2.5 mm
SW 55° 65° 35.5 in 2 mm

After the gap wedge (GW, 49°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 7°, just over the 4° to 6° step; a wedge in between would leave two steps under 4°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The Cobra DS-ADAPT MAX came in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.

How the 4.5 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what Cobra publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.
