Choose it if

  • You make decent contact and want help on the misses from a slimmer head.
  • You catch the ground before the ball: the sole is wide, so it skids instead of digging.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both were stock builds.

Choose something else if

  • If you want more help than a compact hollow head gives, Srixon's ZXiR HL is its most forgiving iron today.

What changed in the ZXi4

Srixon followed the ZX4 with the ZX4 Mk II, then the ZXi4. Its tables give the ZX4 and the ZXi4 the same lofts and lies from the 4-iron to the AW (a 28.5° 7-iron), and the ZXi4 adds a 56° SW. The ZXi4 has less offset (3.2 mm at the 7-iron against 3.7, 2.2 mm at the PW against 2.8, 1.8 mm at the AW against 2.3) and a sole Srixon calls moderate, where the ZX4's was the widest of its family (23.6 mm at the 7-iron); it also makes the AW left-handed. Srixon lists the ZXi4 a quarter inch longer, but says only the way it measures length changed. The ZX4 scores 3.5 here, as the game improvement iron Srixon made it with the wide sole Srixon names; the ZXi4 scores 2.0, as we class it with the players distance irons.

Srixon no longer sells the ZX4 new, and used sets cost far less than a new ZXi4. Choose a used ZX4 for its wider sole and extra offset, if a set comes in your hand and flex; choose a used ZX4 Mk II for the same lofts with a slimmer sole, or the ZXi4 for a new set built to order.

After the approach wedge (AW, 49°): with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 7°, just over the 4° to 6° step; a wedge in between would leave two steps under 4°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The Srixon ZX4 came in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.
