Takomo 201 MKII irons
Players distance, 2.0 of 5 for forgiveness
Takomo's hollow-body iron for golfers a step above game improvement, handicaps 5 to 25: a shorter blade, a thinner sole and a slimmer top line than its 101 MKII, 2.77 mm of offset and a 31° 7-iron. Less help than Takomo's 101 MKII (3.0 of 5): choose the 101 MKII if you want more help on a mishit.
2.0 of 5 forgiveness score
$649 at Takomo
Takomo takes a stock set back within 30 days of delivery even after you have played its 7-iron, if the other clubs are unused. Custom builds cannot be returned, and shipping is not refunded.
Choose it if
- You strike it well and want distance with a little help.
- You want a higher flight: the 31° 7-iron is weaker than most.
- You play left-handed: it is sold left-handed.
- You want to spend less: $649 is in the cheapest third of the 43 we price.
Choose something else if
- You need a stock senior flex (Takomo builds senior only to order): PING G740, senior (A) flex in stock, 5.0 of 5.
- For more help on a mishit, Takomo's 101 MKII is its game improvement iron: the longer blade and thicker sole the 201 MKII trims, and 3.4 mm of offset at the 7-iron.

What changed from the 201
Takomo rebuilt the 201 for the MKII. The first 201 is forged in one piece from S20C carbon steel, a cavity back Takomo calls a players' iron, for handicaps 0 to 14; the 201 MKII is a hollow body cast from 17-4 steel with a face that changes thickness across the 4- to 7-irons, and Takomo pitches it a step above game improvement, for handicaps 5 to 25. The MKII has more offset in every club (2.77 mm at the 7-iron against 2 mm) and a 7-iron a degree stronger (31° against 32°); the other lofts and every lie are the same. So the two sit in different classes here: the first 201 with the players irons, the MKII with the players distance irons.
Takomo still sells the first 201 new as its final batch, in either hand and for less than the 201 MKII. Choose it if you strike the ball well and want a forged one-piece head with less offset; choose the 201 MKII for more help on a mishit, from its hollow body, the face that changes thickness through the long irons and the extra offset.

How the 2.0 adds up
The forgiveness score is our reading of what Takomo publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.
| Part | Points | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Head class | 2 | Players distance: a compact head that forgives a little. |
| Offset | +0 | 2.8 mm at the 7-iron, below our 4.5 mm mark. |
| Sole | +0 | Takomo describes the sole ("thinner than the 101 MKII's, in Takomo's words") but not as wide. |
| Forgiveness score | 2.0 | of 5 |
The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is.
