PING G430 irons

Game improvement, 3.5 of 5 for forgiveness

PING's game improvement iron before the G440, with the same 4.6 mm of offset and the same 29° 7-iron; PING added a 41° pitching wedge to fill the gap its stronger lofts left. PING now builds the G430 only as fill-in or replacement clubs, and the G440 replaced it.

Choose it if

  • You make decent contact and want help on the misses from a slimmer head.
  • Your iron shots start right or fly low: 4.6 mm of offset gives the face more time to square.
  • You need a left-handed club or a senior flex: both are stock.
  • You want to spend less: $949 is in the cheapest third of the 43 we price.

Choose something else if

  • Choose the G740 instead if thin and heavy strikes are your main miss: it is PING's bigger, wider-soled head.

What changed in the G440

The G440 keeps what decides forgiveness: the 4-iron to 9-iron lofts (19° to 37°, with a 29° 7-iron), the offset (4.6 mm at the 7-iron), the lies and the bounce are the same as the G430's. By PING's tables, the G440's 4-, 5- and 6-irons are longer (by 3/8, 1/4 and 1/8 inch), its pitching wedge is 42° against 41°, and its matching wedges are a UW, 52° and 56° in place of 45°, 50°, 54° and 58°. PING also gives the G440 a shallower face and a shorter blade, and moves the stock steel shaft from the AWT 2.0 to the AWT 3.0.

So a G430 set bought used gives the same help on our score as a new G440 for less; the table has both prices. Choose the G440 for a full set new, the longer long irons or the new wedge lofts.

After the 50° wedge: with a 56° sand wedge, the gap is 6°.

Callaway's iron fitting guide puts your first wedge 4° to 6° above the highest-lofted wedge in your iron set. A gap in degrees is not a gap in yards. To choose that wedge, see the forgiving wedges by loft and bounce.

Use the iron finder to compare sets for your usual miss, and check the set makeup and loft gaps before ordering. Between a game improvement and a super game improvement head, this is how to tell which one your strike needs.

The PING G430 is sold in a senior (A) flex as well as regular (R): what the senior flex changes, and who it suits.

How the 3.5 adds up

The forgiveness score is our reading of what PING publishes about the head, from 1 to 5. It is not a test result. How every score works.

The parts of the forgiveness score
PartPointsWhy
Head class 3 Game improvement: a forgiving head, slimmer than super game improvement.
Offset +0.5 4.6 mm at the 7-iron, at or above our 4.5 mm mark.
Sole +0 PING doesn't publish a sole width, so the sole earns no point.

The score rates the head only. Hand, flex and price decide which version you buy, not how forgiving it is. PING does not publish a sole width.
