Measure your upper hand (the left for a right-handed golfer) from the crease of your wrist to the tip of your middle finger. On Golf Pride's chart, 5" to 6.5" is undersize, 6.6" to 7.5" is standard, 7.6" to 9" is midsize; under 5" is a junior grip and over 9" jumbo. Your glove size gives the same answer for most hands, and the feel test below settles the rest.
Your grip size
This is an example: a 7" hand and a men's M/L glove. Type your own hand length or choose your glove size, and the sizes below follow.

7" (17.8 cm): a standard grip on Golf Pride's chart.
Sizes are each maker's own; a size name means the same kind of grip across makers, not the same diameter to the thousandth. Winn sizes from the glove alone and calls it "a starting point".

The feel test
Hold a club in your upper hand as you would to swing, and look at your fingers. Golf Pride's test:
The right size: your fingers barely touch the heel pad of your hand.
Too small: your fingers dig into the heel pad, wrapping underneath it.
Too large: your fingers do not reach the heel pad at all.
PING, which sizes grips for its own clubs, says a grip too small or too large "can have a detrimental effect on your ball flight direction". Once you know your size, our guide to the best golf grips compares the soft, all-weather and thicker models.
Between two sizes
Golf Pride's answer is tape: a shop adds extra wraps of grip tape under a grip to make it a little bigger, and Golf Pride suggests 2 to 4 wraps for an in-between feel: by its installation FAQ, one wrap adds about 1/64 inch, two wraps 1/32 and four wraps 1/16. Try one club first; how to regrip golf clubs shows where the tape goes. Some golfers build up only the lower part of the grip, under the bottom hand.
The shaft matters too. A grip's core is made for a shaft size, and Golf Pride notes that a .58 core grip on a .600 shaft feels thicker than a .60 core grip on the same shaft. Ask the shop which core it is fitting.
Sore hands or arthritis
Golf Pride suggests going a size up, as long as you can still hold the club securely, and points to its softer CP grips, which absorb vibration. Some forgiving clubs for slower swings already ship with a lighter grip: PING fits a Lamkin UTx Lite to its HL builds.
PING's grip colors
PING sizes its own grips by color, from a chart that plots your hand length against your longest finger. The colors run from blue, the smallest, to orange, the largest:

Questions golfers ask
Which hand do I measure?
Your upper hand on the club: the left hand for a right-handed golfer, the right for a left-hander. Measure from the crease where your wrist meets your palm to the tip of your middle finger.
Do women need undersize grips?
Many do, because their hands are smaller, but the hand decides, not the line. Golf Pride puts a women's S or M glove at undersize and a women's M/L or L at standard, the same as a men's M.
Does grip size change for putters?
Yes. Putter grips are sized by feel and by how much you want to quiet your hands, not by this chart, and many are much thicker than a swing grip. The forgiving putters page compares the putters we cover.
How often should grips be replaced?
When they turn shiny, hard or slippery. How long golf clubs last gives the makers' own advice and what a regrip costs.
