Best driver for beginners and high handicappers
A beginner's driver, and a high handicapper's, needs a forgiving head, enough loft to get the ball in the air (12° in stock gives you room) and draw help if your drives curve right. The Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D has all three, for $299.99. You do not need to pay more for forgiveness: the dearest current head scores no higher than it.
-
If your drives curve right: forgiving, high loft, draw help
Forgiveness 4.0 out of 5
Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D
A heel-weighted draw head with built-in offset to fight a fade or slice, sold up to an unusually high 15° of loft.
Our picks for a beginner
-
If your drives curve right: forgiving, high loft, draw help
Forgiveness 4.0 out of 5
Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D
Heel weight and built-in offset help square the face; 10.5°, 12° or 15°.
-
If they go both ways: the most forgiving neutral head
Forgiveness 4.0 out of 5
Cobra OPTM MAX-K
Cobra's most forgiving driver head: a 460cc shape with the weight fixed low and back, and a hosel that adjusts loft up to two degrees either way.
-
Forgiving, with 12° in stock, for less
Forgiveness 4.0 out of 5
Cobra OPTM MAX-D
Cobra's slice-correction head: an 11-gram heel weight moves the centre of gravity toward the hosel so the face closes more easily, in 10.5° or 12°.
What a beginner's driver needs
- A forgiving head. A big, deep head twists less when you miss the centre, so a heel or toe strike flies straighter and closer to full distance. 17 of the 28 current drivers we cover take our top score of 4.0 of 5, read from the makers' own descriptions of the head (how we score), not from a hitting test.
- Enough loft. More loft launches the ball higher with more backspin, which keeps a mishit in the air and a slice from curving as far. Start at 10.5°, and take 12° if your drives fly low. 23 of the 28 come in 12° or more, and the Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D and Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D Women's go up to 15°; the PING G440 SFT stops at 10.5°, the Titleist GTS2 at 11°, the PING G Le4 at 11.5°, the Cobra OPTM X at 10.5° and the XXIO 14 at 11.5°.
- Draw help, if you slice. A head weighted toward the heel closes the face more easily through impact. 12 of the 28 have some draw help; the best driver for slicers sorts them by how much. If your misses go both ways, a neutral head is the better choice.
- A shaft that fits your swing. Regular flex suits a driver swing of about 85 to 95 mph, senior (A) flex a swing under about 85 mph. 18 of the 28 heads list a senior flex as stock. If you do not know your speed, a fitting bay or a launch monitor at a shop will tell you in a few swings.
- A price you will not regret. New, forgiving heads run from $299.99 (Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D) to $799.99 (XXIO 14). A used head of last year's model costs less again; see below.

Last year's driver, used, for less
A driver changes little from one generation to the next, while its price drops once the next one arrives. 32 earlier heads we cover score as forgiving as today's best and come in 12°, and used ones start at $89.99. A used listing is one club in one loft, flex and condition: check that the flex suits your swing before you buy. The used guide says what else to check, and budget drivers lists every head by its lowest price.
Earlier forgiving drivers, often cheaper used
