Irons Updated
Best budget irons
Half the current forgiving iron sets we cover cost $157.14 a club or more. The Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D Ironwoods is a current, forgiving set for $85.71 a club, and used sets cost less again. Sets come with 5 to 8 clubs, so every price here is also given per club, with the day we checked it.

Why we price a set by the club
The Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D Ironwoods ($599.99 for 7 clubs) and the PXG Wildcat ($749.95 for 5) are not the same buy: the first is $85.71 a club, the second $149.99 a club. The makers and shops sell different set makeups (one set runs from the 4-iron to the pitching wedge, another from the 7-iron to the sand wedge), and a used set is whatever its owner kept. Dividing by the clubs a price buys puts them on one scale. Check which clubs a set includes, too: a set without a 5-iron or a gap wedge leaves you a club to buy.
Is an earlier set less forgiving?
A little, by our score. The median forgiveness score of the 58 earlier iron sets we score is 3.25 of 5, against 3.5 for the 44 current ones (how we score), and 17 of the earlier sets score 4 or more. A forgiving head changes little from one generation to the next, while its price drops once the next one arrives. A used set from a shop that grades its clubs and takes returns is the best value of all, if its clubs, flex and condition suit you.
