Hybrid vs iron: which hybrid replaces which iron

A hybrid does the job of a long iron with a head that is easier to get in the air: a wide sole and a hollow body put the weight low and far back, and the sole skids across the turf instead of digging. Match it to the iron by loft, not by the number on the head: the 4-irons of the sets below run from 18.5° to 23°, and the makers' 4-hybrids from 20° to 23°. In 14 of the 28 sets below, at least one long iron is matched by a hybrid with a different number.

When a hybrid is the easier club

An iron still has a place where you need to keep the ball low, under branches or into wind, and in the shorter clubs, where a forgiving iron is already easy to hit. Golfers who struggle with long irons usually swap the 4-iron and anything longer first, then the 5 if it still gives trouble. Between the two sits the utility iron: a hollow long iron that launches higher than a standard one but forgives less than a hybrid.

Which hybrid replaces which iron

Each current forgiving iron set whose maker publishes its long-iron lofts, beside that maker's current hybrid of the nearest loft (within 1.5°). A dash means the maker sells no hybrid that close; the next hybrid up or down will leave a bigger or smaller gap.

Each cell: the iron's loft, then the hybrid of the nearest loft. Lofts are the makers' own; a hybrid sold without a number is shown by its loft.

In 2 sets, two irons point to the same hybrid: the TaylorMade Qi Max's 4-iron at 18.5° and 5-iron at 21° both point to the 3H at 20°; and the Titleist T250's 3-iron at 20° and 4-iron at 22° both point to the 21° hybrid. That hybrid's loft sits between the two irons, so it takes the place of one of them, not both, and stays close in loft to the one you keep. Put it in for the longer iron, the harder one to hit. To replace the shorter iron as well, take the maker's next hybrid up in loft and check the step from it to the iron after it.

How to swap without a gap

  1. Find your set's lofts in the loft chart, or on its club page.
  2. Choose the hybrid within a degree or two of the iron it replaces, whatever number it carries.
  3. Check the step above it: the next club up (a fairway wood or a lower-lofted hybrid) should have about 3° to 4° less loft. Hybrid vs fairway wood matches the woods to the hybrids.

The most forgiving hybrids ranks the heads, and the bag check shows any gap or overlap once you enter the clubs you carry.
