Wedge lofts: pitching, gap, sand and lob

A pitching wedge has 40° to 48° of loft, and 44° in the middle of the 51 current iron sets we cover, as each maker's own specification page lists it. No rule fixes the loft of a wedge; each maker sets its own. In the same sets the gap wedge runs from 45° to 53°, and the sand wedge, in the 21 sets that include one, from 54° to 57°. Only one, the TaylorMade Qi Max, includes a lob wedge (58°); otherwise it is bought on its own, from 60° to 64° among the separate wedges we cover. The chart below gives every set's wedges as its maker prints them.

Every iron set's wedge lofts

Sorted by the pitching wedge's loft, the lowest first. A dash means the set does not include that club; you buy it as a separate wedge.

How we count

Each loft is the pitching wedge's loft on its maker's own specification page for the set, the club the maker calls PW or P (PING's G Le and PXG call it W). The figure covers the current iron sets in our catalogue whose makers publish every wedge's loft, a women's version counted as its own set, not every set on sale; a set counts from the day it joined the catalogue, so a row is added when a joining set moves the figure. The median is the middle loft, or the average of the two middle ones when the count is even. A loft corrected from the maker's page is corrected in every row.

One club, five names: the gap wedge

The wedge between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge has no agreed name. Among the sets above, AW (Callaway, Haywood, Srixon, TaylorMade, Tour Edge and XXIO), GW (Cleveland, Cobra and Mizuno), G (Takomo and Wilson), UW (PING) and W (Titleist) all name the same club. Compare the loft on the spec sheet, never the letters on the sole: a 45° to 53° span hides behind them.

Wedges sold on their own

A separate wedge is sold in many lofts, usually two degrees apart, each with its own bounce. The forgiving ones we cover: the Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D, 52° to 60°, the Cleveland Women's CBX 4 ZipCore, 48° to 60°, the Cleveland Smart Sole Full-Face, 42° to 64°, the Cobra KING-X, 48° to 60°, the Callaway CB 12, 50° to 60°, the Cleveland CBZ, 44° to 60°, the Cleveland Women's CBZ, 48° to 60° and the Cleveland CBZ Full-Face, 50° to 60°. Every loft and bounce is side by side in the forgiving wedges chart.

Which wedge to add after your set

Start from your set's last wedge in the chart above, then add wedges four to six degrees apart, usually ending at a sand wedge of 54° to 58°. The forgiving wedges page works through two examples, and every iron club page works out the step from its own set's wedges. To weigh a 52°, 56° or 60° against your set, see 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges; for the irons' own lofts, the golf club loft chart.
