Irons Updated
Best irons for seniors
Senior irons are forgiving irons with a senior (A) flex shaft, lofts that launch a slower swing and soles that forgive a heavy strike. Choose the flex by your swing speed, not your age: senior flex suits a driver swing under about 85 mph. The PXG Wildcat does as much as any for that swing ($749.95), and 25 of the 44 current iron sets we cover come in senior flex as stock.
-
Best for a slower swing
Forgiveness 5.0 out of 5
PXG Wildcat
Wide sole, 4.6 mm of offset and a high-launching 32° 7-iron.
Our picks for a slower swing
-
Forgiveness 5.0 out of 5
PXG Wildcat
PXG's iron for golfers starting out: a wide sole, 4.6 mm of offset and a 32° 7-iron for a higher launch, left- or right-handed. PXG makes it from the 7-iron to the sand wedge only, so a hybrid covers the longer shots.
-
The most forgiving head in senior flex
Forgiveness 5.0 out of 5
PING G740
PING's super game improvement iron: a wider sole, a longer blade and 4.8 mm of offset at the 7-iron, the three things that add help on a mishit.
-
The highest launch: the weakest 7-iron loft
Forgiveness 4.0 out of 5
Srixon ZXiR HL
Srixon's first super game improvement iron: weaker lofts, with a 32.5° 7-iron, and 4.2 mm of offset to launch higher for a slower swing.
-
Hybrid-shaped heads in place of long irons
Forgiveness 4.5 out of 5
Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D Ironwoods
Ironwoods: hollow, wide-soled heads between an iron and a hybrid, with 4.5 mm of offset in the 4-, 5- and 6-iron.
$599.99 at Tour Edge
-
Senior flex for less: the lowest price a club
Forgiveness 4.0 out of 5
Tour Edge Hot Launch Max
A low-cost game improvement iron with 5 mm of offset at the 7-iron and a slightly wider sole.
What a slower swing needs from irons
- A shaft it can bend. Senior (A) flex is softer than regular, so the same effort bends it more and launches the ball higher. The senior flex guide explains the difference. Callaway calls its senior flex Light, and lists it as R2 (Light) on its newest clubs. 19 of the 44 current sets list no senior flex as stock and are left out here.
- Lofts that launch. The 7-irons here run from 28° to 32.5°. A weaker loft launches higher and lands softer; a stronger one flies further when the swing can get it up. If your irons fly low, look at the higher numbers in the 7-iron column, and see the loft chart for every club in each set.
- A sole that forgives a heavy strike. A wide sole skids through the turf instead of digging when you catch the ground first. The makers call the sole wide on 7 of these 25 sets.
- Hybrids, or hybrid-shaped heads, for the long irons. Long irons are the hardest clubs to launch. The PING G Le4 replaces them with hybrids (5H, 6H, 7H, 8H); with any other set, a hybrid of the same loft can replace the longest irons: hybrid vs iron matches them, maker by maker.
