  1. Most forgiving overall

    Forgiveness 5.0 out of 5

    PING G740

PING's super game improvement iron: a wider sole, a longer blade and 4.8 mm of offset at the 7-iron, the three things that add help on a mishit. Sold in senior flex and left-handed.

$1,299.99 at PGA TOUR Superstore7 irons (5-9, PW, UW) · checked 2 Nov

Used from $791.99 at 2nd Swing Golf6 clubs (6-PW, AW), graphite, senior flex, below average condition · checked 31 Oct

Its 7-iron is a strong 28°. If you need more height, compare the PXG Wildcat (32°) or the Srixon ZXiR HL (32.5°); if you strike it well and want a slimmer head, the G440.

  2. For a slice

5.7 mm of offset at the 7-iron, the most of the sets we cover, gives the face more time to square up before impact.

PXG makes it from the 7-iron to the sand wedge only, so a hybrid covers the longer shots. A sole described as wide skids through the turf instead of digging when you catch the ground first.

Four sets share the top score of 5 of 5: the PING G740, the PXG Wildcat in men's and women's builds and the Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal HL. The PING G740 comes first. The PXG Wildcat costs less, $749.95, but PXG makes it from the 7-iron down only, so you add a hybrid for the longer shots. The Mizuno JPX925 Hot Metal HL has more offset (5.7 mm) and a higher-launching 31° 7-iron but comes right-handed only, in R or S flex.

All 44 forgiving iron sets, compared

Sorted by forgiveness score; on a tie, the set more golfers can buy comes first (sold left-handed, then a senior or ladies flex), then a set that includes the long irons, then the lower price. The finder above and the bag builder use the same rule. Click a column heading to sort by offset, loft or price instead. A lower score can mean the maker publishes less about the head: the club page says which detail is missing.

From shortlist to the set you order

The sets your finder answers are shown here with what you choose when you order: the clubs in the set, the hand, the flex and the shafts. Change the finder and these follow.

Choose a matching set in the finder to see what you order with it.

Length, lie and shaft

Height alone does not set your length or lie: a shop or fitter checks your wrist-to-floor measurement and how the sole meets the ground in your swing. Choose the head and shaft together, and pick flex by swing speed, never by age. The senior flex guide explains what a softer shaft changes, and the senior clubs page lists every set sold in one.

Both ends of the set

At the long end, if your longest iron will not get airborne, a hybrid or a fairway wood of similar loft does that job more easily. At the short end, the label on a wedge is not its loft: the pitching wedges here run from 40° to 48°, so check the loft of the set's last wedge before you choose the next one.

The forgiving wedges page shows which lofts to add after your pitching wedge. A combo set, with a different head for the long irons, works too; check that the lofts step evenly where the two models meet.

Not sure which class suits your strike? The game improvement against super game improvement guide sets the two side by side. Preparing a first fitting? See what to check at a beginner club fitting.

Each line is a published angle from vertical, on the same scale. A stronger loft does not measure forgiveness or carry distance.

How the iron score works

The score reads the maker's published design: the head class, the offset at the 7-iron and the sole. It is not a test result; we do not hit the clubs.

How the forgiveness score adds up
PartPointsWhy it helps on a mishit
Head classSuper game improvement 4; game improvement 3; players distance 2; players 1A bigger head with more weight around the edges twists less on a heel or toe strike
Offset+0.5 for at least 4.5 mm at the 7-ironThe face has a fraction longer to square up, and the ball launches higher
Sole+0.5 when the maker calls it wideA wide sole skids through the turf on a heavy strike instead of digging

For the PING G740: 4 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 5 of 5. A detail the maker does not publish earns no point, and the club page names it. The full method covers the finder's ranking and ties; compare any three sets side by side.

The parts of a forgiving iron

A cavity-back iron, explained
  1. Hosel: the shaft joins the heel here. Offset is the face's setback from the hosel, best checked in a side view.
  2. Topline: the upper edge of the head.
  3. Cavity: the recessed back leaves more mass around the edges.
  4. Perimeter weight: mass around the heel and toe helps resist twisting on a miss.
  5. Wide sole: the broad bottom carries weight low and helps the head move through turf.

Tap a part to see where it sits on the head: the cavity, the sole and the offset are the three things the score reads.

Earlier irons, often cheaper used

Older iron sets golfers still search for by name, now sold mostly used, each beside its maker's current set. The lists above choose from the current sets only.

Questions buyers ask

Which irons are the most forgiving?

The PING G740, on our reading of the makers' designs: a super game improvement head with a wider sole and 4.8 mm of offset at the 7-iron, left- or right-handed, senior to extra stiff. For your own miss, the picks above name the best set for a slice, heavy strikes, more height and a budget.

What irons should a 20 handicap play?

Most 20 handicappers do best with a game improvement or super game improvement set: a cavity back, some offset and a wider sole. If thin and heavy strikes cost you shots, go for super game improvement; if you strike it solidly most of the time and want a slimmer look, game improvement.

How far should I hit a 7-iron?

It depends on your swing speed and on the 7-iron's loft, which runs from 28° to 35° across the sets here: a stronger loft flies further but lower. Compare your carry with the loft of the 7-iron you hit now, not the number on the sole.

Will more offset fix my slice?

It helps a little: offset gives the face a fraction longer to close, so a slice starts a touch less right. It will not cure a slice that comes from your swing path, and a draw-biased driver does more for the tee shot. The slice pick above has the most offset among the top sets.

Can I choose senior flex from my age?

No: choose flex from your swing speed. A smooth swing under about 85 mph with a driver usually suits a senior (A) shaft; 22 of the 44 iron sets here sell one. 3 more come in Callaway's R2 (Light), the flex its buying guide calls senior. If you do not know your speed, a shop or fitter can measure it in a few swings.

What if the maker publishes no offset or sole details?

The set still scores from its head class; an offset or sole the maker does not publish earns no point, and its club page says which detail is missing.

Does the price buy every iron?

It buys the set shown beside it, usually seven clubs such as 5-iron to pitching wedge plus a gap wedge. Makers that price by the club are shown at seven times the per-club price, labelled; the PXG Wildcat at five times, because PXG makes it from the 7-iron to the sand wedge only. Extra irons and wedges cost more.

Should I replace my hybrids and wedges too?

Only if they leave a gap. Check the loft step from your new set's longest iron to your hybrid, and from its last wedge to the wedges you own; each iron page works out the wedge step for you.
